Who we are

A specialist school built around the eye

Based in Jinja, the Ophthalmic Clinical Officer Training School exists to strengthen eye health services across Uganda by producing well-trained, practice-ready ophthalmic clinical officers and allied eye health workers.

Our training combines rigorous theory with daily clinical practice, laboratory sessions and community outreach. Students graduate able to examine, diagnose and manage common eye conditions — and confident enough to lead eye care services at district level.

Everything we do is guided by a clear vision, a focused mission and a set of values that shape how we teach, learn and care for patients.

Our direction

Vision & Mission

Two simple statements that guide every decision, lesson and clinical encounter.

Our Vision

To improve eye health in Uganda and beyond.

We look forward to a future where preventable blindness is rare and quality eye care reaches every community — urban and rural alike.

Our Mission

To produce competent and well-trained ophthalmic clinical officers and health workers.

Through excellent teaching, supervised clinical practice and community engagement, we prepare graduates who deliver safe, effective and compassionate eye care.

What we stand for

Our Core Values

Five values that shape the culture of our school and the character of our graduates.

01

Cost Effectiveness

We use our resources wisely and prudently, keeping quality training affordable and sustainable for the students and communities we serve.

02

Compassion

Every patient is met with dignity, empathy and kindness. We teach our students to see the person behind the condition — not just the eye.

03

Collective Responsibility

Every member of the school community — staff, student and partner — owns the outcomes we achieve together, in class and in the clinic.

04

Commitment

We give our full effort to teaching, learning and patient care — showing up, following through and never settling for second best.

05

Team Work

Tutors, clinicians, administrators and students pull in the same direction. We achieve far more together than any of us could alone.
